What is the difference between a sleigh bed and a mission bed?
Q. Does both of these beds require no bed box spring? I'm interested in building a nice platform bed and just wondering if these bed types are similar to a platform bed. Also anyone know of any sites that have good platform bed plans. Thanks in advance.

A. Sleigh beds and Mission beds refer to the aesthetics of the bed. Sleigh beds are reminiscent of (surprise!) sleighs, while mission-style beds are in the arts-and-crafts / clean lines / mission style. Mission would be a more appropriate style for a platform bed but either can be a platform bed if you wish, you just need to design it as such.

How can I prevent bed bugs from spreading to my new apartment?
Q. I moved into an apartment, and they didn't tell me but they have bed bugs. I've been getting bit every night so i'm planning on moving out. I just want to make sure no bed bugs follow me to the new apartment and lay eggs. Any tips on what i can do or how i can make sure any bed bugs don't move with me?

A. Since bed bugs hide in small crevices, they can travel with luggage, furniture, clothing, boxes, ect. This is how they move between hotels, homes and apartments. Used furniture, particularly bed frames and mattresses, are of greatest risk of harboring bed bugs and their eggs. How much bedding material do you put on your babies bed?
Q. I am not sure how much linen and blankets I should put on my 4 month old babies bed. I don't want to overheat him due to the SIDS risk but I also don't want him to freeze now that the weather is cooling down.

A. You need to put as many clothes on your baby and as many blankets in his bed as he needs to stay warm. However, if you wrap his mattress in polyethylene sheeting and use only 100% cotton blankets, you don't need to worry about SIDS. Researchers out of New Zealand have some very compelling information that suggests that SIDS may be due to an interaction between fungus that grows on mattresses (because they are warm and moist) and the fire-retardant chemicals in the mattresses. Apparently, when the fungus interacts with the chemicals, a nerve gas is produced which prevents nerve impulses that control heart rate and breathing from reaching the heart and lungs.
