What type of bedding should I use with a platform bed?
Q. I have just purchased platform beds for all the bedrooms in my home and I'm not sure what type of bedding to buy. I don't want the comforter, quilt, whatever to hang over the platform of the bed as the platform extends past the mattress and is really what I love most about the new beds. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

A. Just tuck the spread under all the way around. To do that and have it look nice buy a thinner spread like a matelasse. A comforter or some quilts would be a little too bulky.

What components does a bed need besides the mattress and the spring thingy?
Q. I've never had to put one together before. Right now in our room we have the mattress and the thing that goes underneath it that has springs all over it. It's pretty low...what else is it supposed to have ...a bed rail? I want a bed thats pretty high. And when I stayed at a hotel recently they had something that went all the way around the bed, like wooden and their bed was pretty high. Clue me in please?

A. Either a bedframe and headboard (footboard optional) or a platform to lift it off the floor. Personally I prefer the platform, but then you need to find a friend who's handy to make it for you. But cover it with faux black leather and you'll have something that Ralph Lauren charges almost $2000 for in one of his stores.

My bed frame has wheels and as a result, my bed rarely stays in place on my hardwood floors. Any thoughts?
Q. I've seen those plastic holders that supposedly stick to the floor, but they look kind of flimsy. Is it possible to replace wheels of frame with legs that won't slide? And on a related note, my headboard is not attached to the frame, so whenever the bed moves, so does the headboard. How can I prevent this? Any thoughts on good ways to attach a wooden headboard to a metal frame? Thanks!
Asked by Gretta S - Tue Apr 29 17:47:42 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Headboard first...Take the mattress/box springs off and line up the frame to the headboard. Drill through the holes in the frame and through the headboard. Attach the headboard tot he frame with bolts of the proper length and size. Get an old bath mat and cut it up into rectangles to fit under the wheels. Fold the rectangle over to form a square with the rubber side both up and down (rug in the middle). See if that takes care of the sliding. Dr. Tommy Skelton

My bed is so uncomfortable & sinks in the middle. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Q. My husband & I are average-size people and this bed is only about 7 years old. It's a King Koil mattress/box springs and we regularly flip it and rotate it, and it still is so uncomfortable. I am now experiencing sore neck, back, hips and I think the bed is the culprit. So, just wondering if there are any cheap remedies or if I should buy a new bed. If your answer is 'buy a new bed', do you have any suggestions of what kind of bed I should get where this won't happen again?
Asked by countrychic - Tue Mar 6 16:01:19 2007 - - 10 Answers - 2 Comments

A. well a cheap fix would be to put a sheet of plywood between the box frame and the mattress, 1/2" should do it. as far a good one to replace yours with, we have a Simmons Beauty Rest that we have had as long as you have had yours. the girlfriend and i are both "plus size" and no problems with it yet. ours is a no flip, so we just turn it around every month or two. the thing that we like most about our Simmons is that we don't disturb each other when one of us gets in or out of bed, it totally isolates us from the other side. i would strongly recommend that you visit a showroom and check them out them out. also, if your pillows are that old too, it's time for new ones. most are only made to last a couple of years. good luck, hope this helps. What are the effects of sleeping in the same bed with someone?
Q. I'm having a dilemma right now. Well I'm going to be living with someone for 6 mos. We're not friends and barely even know each other. The reason for this is that we're both on a very tight budget and decided to share a room together. But now there's this bed problem. The room has a queen sized bed and we were planning to put another single bed inside the room. The owner doesn't want to replace it with two separate beds so we decided to put another bed (my roomie doesn't want a mattress alone so it's gotta be an entire single bed). Right now I can see that it's gonna take up too much space inside the room. So you can just imagine. Can someone pls enlighten me on this? Thanks! We're both female btw.

A. I'm a bit of an 'oldie' here, and I can tell you that years ago no-one batted an eyelid at same-sex sharing of beds. In those days it was a necessity anyway. As long as your room-mate is happy to share without any hang-ups go for it. Sisters share, be like sisters with each other and respect each other, no harm done and your morals are still intact. Good luck.

What kind of dog bed is good for a yellow lab who gets stinky?
Q. He has one of those flannel patterned dog beds in his crate made out of fluffy fleece and it stinks a week after bathing him. He stays in the house all day and just sits in his bed and makes it stinky. He loves his dog bed but the smell is too much...what material other than garbage bags wont hold the smell as much?

A. Labs are the smelliest! I have one too. Try to find one that the filling can be removed so that you can wash the lining as needed. We found one at Cabela's (www.cabelas.com). Just buy some cotton filling at a craft store so that you can refill it with fresh cotton after you wash it.

How to pick good bed wedge for heartburn problems?
Q. I am trying to buy a bed wedge which are supposedly good for easing heartburn. I've read that the minimum recommended elevation is 6-8 inches. The bed wedges come in 8, 10 and 12 inches elevation. It seems to me that the elevation should somehow depend on your height, but I am not sure. I am about 6 ft. Does anyone know which bed wedge is best? Thanks for any help!

A. Some great summaries of studies regarding bed wedges can be found at BedLift.com - See this: " Using continuous monitoring of pH (acidity) within the esophagus among several alternative positions at rest, this randomized clinical trial detected a significant decrease in the time that the esophagus was exposed to highly acid conditions when using a foam wedge to elevate the head, and also showed a decrease in the time necessary for the acid to be cleared. Interestingly, use of a wedge-shaped mechanism was significantly more effective than elevation through the use of standard bed blocks." and " METHODS: The subject was placed supine on a standard hospital bed. The head of the bed was then elevated to 30 degrees according to 2 protocols:… [cont.]

Shopping for a new bed. Recently stayed in a hotel and noticed their bed was quite comfortable.?
Q. Wondering what was the difference in the beds? or better yet what makes the mattresses more comfortable than others?? Is it the amount of coils or springs? I mean does more coils or springs lead to a more comfortable bed?
Asked by sthomasmmg - Mon Apr 14 16:19:07 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Call the hotel and find out what they're using... a good night's sleep is a good recommendation that what they had was a good bed for you -- much better than number of coils. Most of the mattress companies can supply the same mattress they sell to a particular hotel.

How do I keep the slats in our bed from falling out?
Q. Our bed has wooden slats in it and when the slats were bought they were mesured for the bed, but I am not sure when they were purchsed, I got the bed from my parents and they have had the bed for a while. The slats fit when we put them in and we are not sure why they fall. How can I keep the slats from falling out. We still live in an apartment and will move often until we are able to get a house or put this bed in the guest room so I need something that can be easily taken apart! Thanks for any help! I really don't know how to can you be more specific for me? Where would I screw it in at, what kind of screws, should I screw it or nail it?

A. Just a thought... what about weather stripping? If you glue some weather stripping to the rails... the slats may not "slip". Again, I haven't tried this, but it seems logical to me.

How can I get my bed stable with bed lifters?
Q. I have one of those plain bed frames that came with the mattress set. It has wheels on it. I bought those very nice bed lifters advertised at Bed Bath & Beyond. But when my roommate and I tried to put them under the corners of the bed, they kept collapsing. I think it's because of the wheels on the corners of the bed frame. I looked at the wheels, and I can't figure out how to take them off; there's no screw or place to put a screwdriver. I really need the under-bed storage space because my roommate keeps putting my stuff in the garage and it's driving me nuts!
Asked by Riki G - Wed Aug 15 12:01:30 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sometimes those Wheels you have to pop them off the bed frame. Might be you need to take a Skrewdriver at the top of the wheels in other words between the wheel and Frame and insert the skrewdriver and use it as a pry to pop the wheel loose. I just hate Bed frames with a Passion...Oh you weren't asking what I thought... Good luck... If you have more questions let me know I'll try to help

A. If you are buying a commercially made bunk bed from a department store or similar, then the bed itself will probably be just fine in terms of strength to hold a normal kid. It might even say in the manufacturer's literature how much it will hold. If you need to assemble it yourself at home, then make sure that all of the screws, nuts and bolts are tight. Follow directions. Double-check everything. Probably more important is routine inspection to be sure that it stays structurally sound. Kids will tend to jump on, in and over just about anything, tending to destroy even the best built furniture. You may need to adjust and tighten it periodically. I grew up with a bunk bed. There was more danger from falling out (or being thrown… [cont.]

Or use it as a pillow on you couch fold and roll it up. Or roll it and use it a a body pillow. If you have a attic put in a big garbage bag and store it there. You could also as someone if you could store it in their attic. Or bring it over here I will store it for you I have plenty of room...LOL JK

A. Start by amending the soil. Soil by analogy: As we require food to support us so do plants. Our digestive system works to break down dinner to supply the basic units that will become us structurally, and provide energy, so soil acts to feed plants. Soil requires a steady supply of organic mater to support the worms and micro-organisms, which digest the organics into available plant nutrients. Then just as we take vitamins to complement our diet we can give plants trace minerals and other supplements but these are no substitute for the staple of organic matter to feed the plants. Balance and moderation are key. You can do a visual soil survey by digging a small hole. First look at the hole and take some soil in hand. Check your soil's… [cont.]
