Bede On Ezra and Nehemiah The Venerable Bede's "In Ezram et Neemiam "is the first and only complete commentary written on the biblical books of Ezra and Nehemiah in the patristic or later medieval era. This is the first English translation of Bede's text, and in it he emerges as a daring innovator, an author who used the stories of Ezra and Nehemiah to explore the pastoral and secular crises of his own day. Translator Scott DeGregorio makes Bede's work both accessible to the layperson and illuminating for the specialist. This edition includes annotations dealing with textual, historical, and religious issues; a comprehensive introduction that places the text in the backdrop of Bede's eighth-century Northumbrian community; two appendices; and a bibliography. |

Adam Bede Period Drama DVD - Written by George Eliot (of Silas Marner fame), the 1859 novel Adam Bede trenchantly addresses the issues of ingrained social prejudices. Played in this British TV adaptation by Iain Glen, the titular Adam Bede is a humble carpenter, enamored of the beautiful but shallow Hetty Sorel (Patsy Kensit). Surrendering to the "political correctness" of her times, Hetty spurns Adam in favor of a wealthy marriage to a nobleman, Lord Arthur (James Wilby). Though he is deeply hurt by this, Adam never relinquishes his love for Hetty and spends the balance of the story trying to win her back in his own single-minded, diligent fashion. Counterbalancing the romantic melodrama is the calm, good-hearted presence of Adam's erstwhile sweetheart, Dinah Morris (Susannah Harker), perhaps the only character in the novel without an agenda. Adapted for television by Maggie Wadey, Adam Bede made its BBC debut in 1991, then aired as part of the PBS anthology Masterpiece Theatre on March 1, 1992. - Adam Bede |

Did you ever read Adam Bede?
Q. A few months ago, I picked up Adam Bede off of my bookshelf and tried to read it. It was the first Eliot novel I ever tried to read, and to be honest, it made me want to chuck the book across the room. Does it get any better? I think I only got to page ten (because of the awful accents and the constant repetition of seemingly unimportant facts) before I quit. I'm usually pretty patient with books, but I couldn't do it. However, with recommendations and advice from people I trust, I might be willing to give it another shot. Any thoughts or words of wisdom on reading Adam Bede? Should I just skip this one so that I can get a better impression of George Eliot's works at a later time? I decided to ask this rather suddenly because I'm getting… [cont.]

A. I confess I haven't read Adam Bede, but I'm with reader that there is no good point to continuing a book which you dislike (unless it's a homework assignment). If I do that, I generally develop an aversion towards the author. I really enjoyed George Eliot's Silas Marner. She isn't my favorite author, but her stories are good. It would be a shame to miss all of them, because you force yourself to read one you don't like. Some authors you don't like now, will be more to your taste later. It happened to me where Charles Dickens was concerned. I had no interest in his books when I was around your age, and now I can't get enough of him and wish he'd written more. All this rambling to say: put it aside. Maybe in a few years you'll be able to… [cont.]
