Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly sulfur, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.

Coal begins as layers of plant matter accumulate at the bottom of a body of water. For the process to continue the plant matter must be protected from biodegradation and oxidization, usually by mud or acidic water. The wide shallow seas of the Carboniferous period provided such conditions. This trapped atmospheric carbon in the ground in immense peat bogs that eventually were covered over and deeply buried by sediments under which they metamorphosed into coal. Over time, the chemical and physical properties of the plant remains (believed to mainly have been fern-like species antedating more modern plant and tree species) were changed by geological action to create a solid material.

Coal, a fossil fuel, is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Gross carbon dioxide emissions from coal usage are slightly more than those from petroleum and about double the amount from natural gas. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining, either underground or in open pits.

How safe is the coal-fired powerplant to humans and the environment?
Q. A coal-fired powerplant is being planned to be constructed here in the area of Iloilo City, Philippines. The government and some members of the business sector seem to support such move. The local church is against it! A lot of people are confused for sure due to some misleading facts about such and add to some political pressures coming from the local and provincial government. Twice was it rejected in two of the northern towns of the Iloilo Province. Now they're setting it up very near the city. Who's on the losing end?

A. A coal fired plant will put a lot of mercury and lead into the atmosphere, and depending on what coal technology is used, it may also put a lot of micro fine particulates into the air, which will produce breathing problems. However, having state all that, when a coal fired plant is using clean coal technology, the major complaint is that it will put a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. With clean coal technology, the toxic substances are disposed of on land, or shipped out to sea. They may or may not come back to poison you, but at least they are not in the air.

How many kilograms of coal must be burned to produce the same energy as 1.0 kg of 23592U?
Q. When 1.0 kg of coal is burned, about 3.0 107 J of energy is released. If the energy released per 23592U fission is 2.0 102 MeV, how many kilograms of coal must be burned to produce the same energy as 1.0 kg of 23592U?

A. firstly, you need to work out how many atoms of uranium make up a kilogram (it weighs 235g per mole) it will be of order 10^24. then convert electron volts to Joules (times eV by 1.6 x 10^-19 and this is then in joules) then work out the difference in energy between the kilogram of uranium and the kilogram of coal. i would calculate this for you, but i think i've given good enough hints here. hope this helps, you should find it takes a lot of coal!
