From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Distance is a numerical description of how far apart objects are. In physics or everyday discussion, distance may refer to a physical length, or an estimation based on other criteria (e.g. "two counties over"). In mathematics, a distance function or metric is a generalization of the concept of physical distance. A metric is a function that behaves according to a specific set of rules, and provides a concrete way of describing what it means for elements of some space to be "close to" or "far away from" each other. In most cases, "distance from A to B" is interchangeable with "distance between B and A". MathematicsSee also: Metric (mathematics)From Wikipedia under the

According to the US DOE (1st link below), visibility is "The greatest horizontal distance in a given direction at which it is just possible to see and identify with the unaided eye (a) in the daytime, a prominent dark object against the sky at the horizon, and (b) at night, a moderately intense light source" The last link below discusses visibility measurement at US airports--an automated process of measuring average air clarity and converting it into a sight-distance equivalent. Q. Mizar has a similar temperature to Vega but appears about nine times fainter to an observer on the Earth. What is the approximate distance of Mizar in light years? What assumption did you make in calculating the distance? Asked by Ateeq - Wed Jan 20 18:38:47 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Astronomers calculated it to be 78 light years. They might have used any of the Technics like parallax, standard candle, variable stars etc to find the distance.
